New House: Laundry Room

Today I'm sharing a room around our house that's used quite often. Whether it's a daily or weekly chore, the laundry room needs to be organized and efficient. Recently I've been purging, sorting, and straightening up this space to work better for our needs. 

Our laundry room has three sets of double cabinets that are wonderful for storing cleaning supplies, mops and brooms, along with dirty clothes baskets. For a multifunction space they also store extra kitchen platters, tupperware, small appliances, and items that aren't used as much.

I found this vintage rolling laundry cart at a flea market. It's so convenient for folding laundry right out of the dryer.

This hanging outdoor lantern is from Lowe's. It adds a little vintage touch to this space along with the old galvanized locker baskets.

I organized everything in the cabinets above the washer and dryer using metal containers, baskets, and glass jars that I already had on hand.  

They store all of our small tools, cleaning rags, light bulbs, and clothes pins. I keep my dryer sheets in a wooden bowl. It's all about pretty storage and decluttering for me.

I've had this chalkboard since our first house. It finally found a permanent spot in the laundry room with a bright green boxwood wreath for some added color.

The best part about reorganizing is having less stuff and more extra space. Now that the room is so simple and clean it certainly makes it much easier to do laundry!

Spring Mantel

To celebrate the start of a new season that's upon us, I thought I would share the Spring Mantel at our store. It's nature inspired and all freshened up for Spring. 

The gray painted and distressed wooden pallet became the perfect backdrop for the mantel display. I used branches, logs, birds, green moss, and a succulent for a natural theme.

The folded book was so simple to make. All you need is a cover-less paperback book and five minutes to fold sections of pages... and that's it!

I bought the wooden nest letters and simply painted them to coordinate with the backdrop. 

I love the aged look of this mantel in our store. It's salvaged from New Orleans and has tons of character, years of chippy paint and the curved detailed top is just gorgeous.

Spring Dining Room

Last month I showed you a sneak peek of our spring dining room when I shared the Spring Vignettes from around our home. 

Since then I have added more color to the dining room tablescape using bright green napkins and moss, along with nature inspired birds nest, grapevine, antlers, and speckled eggs.

This is a great view looking into the kitchen and the breakfast nook area.

I decided to use grapevine wreaths for a more affordable option instead of chargers or place mats. I love the way they add texture to the table setting. 

This bright spring wreath was created by adding floral stems to a large grapevine wreath. So simple for such a big impact!

I used white china to help contrast against the brown branches and nests. 

Here's one last look of the dining room. 

Now that we are ready for Spring on the inside of our house, bring it on outside!

Mirrored Doors

We found these rare, antique doors from Australia on a recent buying trip. They have such amazing, chippy original mustard and light gray paint that can't be duplicated. 

We took the glass panels out and replaced them with mirrors cut to size for the doors.

They casually lean against the wall in our master bedroom behind our antique dresser. I love the way they reflect light so beautifully. They make such a grand statement since they are so tall.

I'm a sucker for salvaged architectural pieces and I have decorated with several of these mirrored doors in our new house. We even used antique doors with mirrors in one of our bedrooms downstairs as closet doors.

Drop Cloth Bench Makeover

First of all, I want to thank y'all so much for all the sweet comments and love from our Master Bedroom Reveal last week! There were several comments about our bench at the foot of the bed. So today I wanted to share with you what the bench looked like before it made it into our bedroom. 

 Here's the before shot of the antique bench with dark wood and dated burgundy velvet fabric. We actually found this at a thrift store years ago. It was a great score for sure!

I had it reupholstered in a neutral drop cloth fabric and painted the dark wood white for a more contemporary look. 

I love all of the little details and how well it looks at the end of our bed.

Master Bedroom Reveal

Today I'm excited to share with you our master bedroom reveal.

We moved into our new house eight months ago and our master bedroom has been a work in progress. I took my time decorating this room and I tried finding the right amount of old and new pieces for this space. We've had our bed and nightstands for seven years and decided to keep them for the new house. I mixed antique finds and refurbished furniture for a more casual feel. I used the same calm and neutral colors like the rest of our home.

One of the things that I love most about this room is the twelve foot ceiling and the openness it creates.

There are a few DIY projects scattered throughout the room. Last week I shared my DIY Abstract Painting, found here. I love the pop of color it adds to this corner.

Another thing I'm obsessed with is my cowhide rug. I moved it several times around the house and it finally looked perfect here; at the foot of the bed.

We recently bought new white bedding and mixed it with pillows we already had.  

I added a few natural elements and antique finds throughout our bedroom for a more collected look.

Our master suite is located right off the living room.

DIY Abstract Painting

It all started when I saw these interesting paintings at a vintage market. 

I knew I could create something similar in color on my own. I have painted many pieces of furniture and tons of small items over the years, but I have never attempted an abstract painting. 

Here are the supplies you'll need:

Canvas of your choice
Acrylic and Latex paint
Flat and Fan Brushes
Wooden Stir Stick or Ruler
Plastic Gloves

After I painted a base coat of light grey over the whole canvas, I let it dry. Then I added seven different colors of paint in sporadic directions as each layer of paint dried. 

I wasn't satisfied with the look of the brush strokes, so I went back and used a stir stick and applied the paint to the canvas in a scrapping motion. That worked well! 

So it really goes to show that you don't need  a lot of art skills to paint an abstract on your own. Just go for it!

I finally had a painting that I was proud to hang in my home. I love the way it looks in our master bedroom. Now I need to find a frame for my piece of art.
