All of these photos have me longing
to throw a summer BBQ party...
I just may have one soon! I have been
redecorating my back patio; we added a wooden
porch swing, more colorful potted flowers, a revamped
coffee table, and a better seating arrangement. I will post pictures when we finish our patio projects.

DIY Pallet Wall Art

I had a huge response on the New Uses for Old Things | Wooden Pallets post I did awhile back. So I've been on a search for more ideas and I came across another fun and easy project using a wooden shipping pallet. This wall art is very simple and beautiful with a great daily reminder of "rules" and "quotes" to live by. Create your own version for your home.  All you need is some paint, stamps or stencils, and a pallet.

Salvaged Wood Wall

I came across this awesome idea on Design*Sponge. It's a feature wall that's made from salvaged and reclaimed wood. They used a variety of bold colors, raw wood, and stained wood to create the unique and beautiful wall. Visually there's something happening with the textures and varied wood boards and the dimensionality of the focal wall that is appealing. This wall will definitely brighten up any room. Now, I'm inspired to create a feature wall!

The wall took 3 days to complete and $130. This is how it started: They went to a local salvage yard, put on gloves and began pulling boards from the high racks of salvaged wood. Then they laid out all the pieces (some siding, some barn wood, some wainscot and a lot of pieces from a deconstructed high-school gym floor. You can see the colors from the school insignia in the green, black, red and coral stripes throughout) outside on the patio and began working out how they'd fit together visually and geometrically. Some pieces were 2.5 inches wide, some were 4.25 inches, some were 9 inches and the rest fell randomly in-between. The next day they started building from the bottom, using a pneumatic/air compressor nail gun to affix the pieces in a horizontal pattern. (A chop saw was essential to cut the lengths; a jigsaw allowed them to cut holes for the outlets.)

They had a few salvage yards where they could find the wood all in one go, but if you don’t, be patient and start collecting piece by piece. "Of course, humor and a good sense of 10th-grade geometry doesn’t hurt." - said the homeowners

Let's talk about Antiques

For some reason, I have a real hang-up with the word "antique". I know what you're thinking.... She's an antique store owner. I know...
Let me explain.

I love old and vintage things. I find comfort in bringing them into my home. And I've always lived surrounded by them. For some reason, the word just seems so dull to me.
And antiques aren't dull. In fact, they're cool.
Antiques and vintage items are actually the best way to add your own unique, one-of-a-kind style to your home. And they can be used in different and unexpected ways.
I think when many people hear the word antiques, they think of old sewing machines, high-laced women's boots, and old dolls. But to me, those are my grandmother's antiques.

These are mine:

And at my store, Jarman Interiors and Antiques, these are not your grandmother's antiques. They're yours. Because it's all about what you love and what you do with it. Antique and vintage pieces are cool like that. Stop by sometime and see what you are missing!
